My Mum and Dad, June and Michael
My Mum, June, was born in 1939 to John Bay and Elsie Hurst. The family lived at 12 Thornfield Street, Weaste, Salford. June has an older sister, Mavis.
During World War 2 Elsie and the girls evacuated to Mawdesley, a village 25 miles inland from Southport, Lancashire. June later attended Tootal Drive Primary School and at age 11 Pendleton High School for Girls. She married Michael Parnell in 1956 with whom she had two children, Janet and Nicholas.
The family lived with June's parents at Thornfield Street, Weaste for the first five years of married life. The house was a typical Salford terrace; it had a small front room, a kitchen and two bedrooms. There was one cold water tap, an outside W.C and a yard - no bathroom, no hot water and no garden. They bought their first house at Anson Street, Monton and later moved to Stour Road, Astley. In 1968, Michael was offered a job in Grantham, Lincolnshire and the family moved to Foston, a small village. June enjoyed village life, joining various local clubs and societies; she was President of Foston Women's Institute for a time. In later life they moved to Sheffield to be nearer their children.
June worked in a variety of roles, mostly office jobs in the insurance industry. June was widowed in 2017 and now lives in a care home in Sheffield.
